RURAL LIBRARY ENRICHMENT GRANTS 2009 AWARDED  

Library People—Friends of Colorado Libraries announces five grants awarded to small and rural libraries for 2009.  The grants are $500 each.  Libraries include:

  • HAXTUN PUBLIC LIBRARY:  To help match required local funds to qualify for Bill & Melinda Gates Rural Sustainability Grant which provides new computer system.

  • LAKE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY (Leadville):  To add materials to enhance after-school science programs for children, many of whom attend regularly.

  • MANITOU SPRINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY:  To support adult programs (especially computer classes), with goal of assisting patrons in employment searches.

  • SPANISH PEAKS LIBRARY DISTRICT (Walsenburg):  To purchase a color laser copier, the only one in town, and supporting a major expansion project for entire library.

  • YUMA PUBLIC LIBRARY:  To purchase a set of teen issues nonfiction books, such as smoking, alcohol, etc , based on requests from local schools and patrons.

The Rural Library Enrichment Project has been in effect since 2005.  Help to small and rural libraries in developing their resources and services is one of Library People’s main efforts.  Libraries are selected based on need, stability, size, demonstration of commitment to the statewide library community, and strong local leadership and management.  This year’s grants were funded by the Kenneth King Foundation.
